The first Basher Fromagerie store was opened 20 years ago at the Mahane Yehuda Market in Jerusalem. The chain’s founder, Eli Basher, fell in love with the European cheese culture during a tour of France, Italy and Spain, and decided to import some of this culture to Israel. Today, more than 1,200 different cheeses are offered at Basher, manufactured at small, rural and family dairies across Europe and selected scrupulously to represent the enormous variety and abundance of the world of cheese. Basher stores draw their aspiration from the aromas, sounds and colors of European boutique stores together with the ambiance of the Middle East, and especially the Mahane Yehuda Market. In a survey conducted by Ha'aretz newspaper among 90 leading Israeli chefs, Basher Fromagerie was chosen as the best cheese delicatessen in Israel.
